The Magic of the Mundane Adventure Guide

We weren’t lost, per se.

We’d just taken a back road…and weren’t exactly sure where it was going to end up.

So when we saw the covered bridge off to the side of the main road, we had no problems deciding to pull over and explore.

After all, when you aren’t lost, aren’t looking to be found, and have no attachments to where you are going, there’s no harm in exploring what is right in front of you.

The Day We Found The Bridge has become a story that our family – my husband, my 9-yr old son, and 6-yr old daughter can still recount. We’ve taken other family members back there since, and dozens more photos in differing seasons. It was a random, unexpected adventure on a day of long, “are-we-there-
yet” driving…an adventure that created a day of happy memories.

These are the mundane adventures. They are the ones that are easy to take…and easy to overlook.

When I think of adventure, the thoughts certainly aren’t of walking across a covered bridge. I think of flights to exotic places, scaling voluminous mountains, hiking through tangled forests, jumping out of planes (with a parachute on my back, of course).

But these adventures are few and far between. Trying to even plan one amidst our family’s schedule and budget becomes an almost impossible adventure alone. Adventure brings us a sense of freedom, of exhilaration, of an I-can-do-this realization, an awareness of what is possible. Waiting for those sporadic adventures that may or may not happen dulls daily life, and makes it seem trivial in comparison to those shining moments.

Instead, go on the small adventures.
Those that can fill your spirit without emptying your bank account.
Those that make you feel ALIVE while you are doing what you were already doing.

It might not seem like much in comparison, but I can promise you that one seemingly small adventure after the next creates an exponential change in the vibrancy of your daily experience. You don’t need to prepare to climb Everest in order to scale your mountains.

The most powerful adventures are those that you will discover on your own in the mundane moments of your life.

Not sure exactly how or where to start? Everyone can use a little guide. As a special bonus to introduce this series, I’ve created a Magic of the Mundane Adventure Guide for you to download. It includes practical adventures you can do – today – with no special GPS tools needed.

  1. I love this! A beautiful story that led to such a beautiful thought. And that bridge is, indeed, incredible! Such an inspirational gift for you and your family, Lisa! Just as you are an inspirational gift to so many of us! 🙂 Thank you for sharing this!

I love the idea of finding adventure in the mundane! And if you turn the idea that adventure gives a sense of exhilaration on its head, then anything that give a sense of exhilaration is really an adventure! And that is fab, because then I can have adventure without even leaving my armchair (or craft room)! So, thank you Lisa – I’m off to find an adventure in the mundane!!!

  3. The mundane isn’t so run of the mill when you can make an adventure out of anything. A fresh set of eyes, and maybe even a little crossed brings forward a whole new world. Welcome Lisa – honoured to paddle around in the bliss habits with you.

Wonderful post, Lisa! As long as you are present, every day can be an adventure day, right? Took the kids to the city with a friend recently, and it turned out to be a great adventure. Kids have a wonderful gift of turning mundane things into fun. So much to keep learning from them 🙂

This is a beautiful post. A reminder that in a society that focuses so much on extreme consumption of goods, some of the greatest delights to be found, are in the simplest experiences. Loved this piece.

Throughout this awesome design of things you’ll receive an A for effort and hard work. Exactly where you actually lost us ended up being in the specifics. You know, people say, details make or break the argument.. And it could not be much more accurate in this article. Having said that, allow me reveal to you what did deliver the results. The writing is actually rather persuasive and that is most likely the reason why I am taking an effort in order to comment. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, even though I can easily see the leaps in logic you come up with, I am not certain of exactly how you appear to unite the details that help to make the conclusion. For now I shall subscribe to your point but wish in the future you actually connect the dots much better.swim with dolphins kona
