We all love a great quote, particularly when they inspire us to take leaps we might normally forego. With this collection I hope to encourage an adventurous spirit. Travel is not required. An open heart will get you there. Please enjoy.

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
~Andre Gide

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming – “WOW – What a Ride!” ~Unknown

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” ~Helen Keller

“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt

“I see my path, but I don’t know where it leads. Not knowing where I’m going is what inspires me to travel it.” ~Rosalia de Castro

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~Mark Twain

“Be brave enough to live creatively. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can only get there by hard work, by risking and by not quite knowing what you are doing. What you will discover will be wonderful: Yourself.” ~Alan Alda

“Remember the high board at the swimming pool? After days of looking up at it you finally climbed the wet steps to the platform. From there, it was higher than ever. There were only two ways down: the steps to defeat of the dive to victory. You stood on the edge, shivering in the hot sun, deathly afraid. At last you leaned too far forward, it was too late for retreat, and you dived. The high board was conquered, and you spent the rest of the day diving. Climbing a thousand high boards, we demolish fear, and turn into human beings.”~Richard Bach – A Gift of Wings

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” ~Marcel Proust

“A man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints.” ~Wilfred Peterson

The best journeys in life are those that answer questions you never thought to ask. ~Credited to Rich Ridgeway (although unverified.)

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all of our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time. ~T.S. Eliott

“One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure.” ~William Feather

“I do not want to get to the end of my life and find that I just lived the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.” -Diane Ackerman

“People don’t take trips. . .trips take people.” ~John Steinbeck

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” ~Travel writer, Mark Jenkins

“An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.” ~G. K. Chesterton

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” ~Jawaharial Nehru

  1. Great quotes, Kathy!
I particularly like Mark Jenkins’ (no relation) quote. It’s so true: when you have traveled to another country you never think of the people from there the same way as before you go there. Your world view changes for the better the more places you visit.
Thanks so much for sharing – which is your favorite?
    Alan

    • Kathy says:

Thank you so much for stopping by Alan! I agree so much with Mark’s quote too! I was an exchange student to Austria while in high school and I consider that year one of the most formative experiences of my life.

My favorite quote is the last one. I love the line about “seeking with our eyes open.” Like Nehru, I believe adventure awaits us where ever we look for it!

  2. Kathy, this is so inspirational and the way to start each day after prayer for me. I love each one of them with making a reassuring feeling flow through me being I live each day as a real adventure. I can not tell you how many days are so amazing that I can not sleep to start and continue my lifetime journey like this way of creative thinking with vision.

Your share will help me and other readers find the inner voice which we may have misplaced so long ago. I know that today my inner voice is back and will not be placed on a shelf per say. I feel the empowering energy that keeps me excited for a new day to arrive. Knowing that just a little while ago the adventure seemed to slow down. That is the end of one glorious day to the next.

Kathy, this will not be my last time learning and sharing with you. Thank you so much for caring to give us a feeling of balance.

    • Kathy says:

William, you are so welcome! I am just delighted you are able to feel adventure in your days. Exhilarating isn’t it?! I look forward to sharing with you again soon!

  3. Hi Kathy, I love the one about climbing the diving board, while reading I was really feeling scared, that’s one thing I haven’t conquered yet:-) It took me awhile to jump into the swimming pool with all my scuba diving gear on, when I was learning to dive. And, it felt sooooo good afterwards! Great quotes, thank you, enjoyed reading them!

    • Kathy says:

I’m glad you enjoyed reading! Funny you said that the diving board is something you haven’t conquered yet. It made me realize that I had conquered it and other things, like doing a flip on the trampoline, but now I am feeling hesitant to do so. Part of me is afraid of getting hurt when this was not a concern when I was younger. I wonder if I just need to get in better physical shape (plan to return to yoga next week!) or if there are just going to be things I don’t do anymore?

I read something funny the other day. It said, I’d rather “have climbed” this mountain than “be climbing” it. In the same way I love that I have skydived but really don’t need to do so again!

  6. Excellent quotes, Kathy! I like “The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience” by Eleanor Roosevelt. It reminds me to slow down and enjoy even the smallest things in life, after all, it’s not just about living, but enjoying the experience.

    • Kathy says:

That’s a great one Cherrie!! “Taste experience to the utmost” Love it. Next week is all about Mindfulness over here so this quote is a perfect segue.

  7. The last one:

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” ~Jawaharial Nehru

For many years I kept a journal of my daily life, writing about things that happened and how they affected me. Others reading about it say I’ve led such an interesting life. Truth is, my life has been rather ordinary, and “provincial” by others’ standards. Writing about the highlight of my day, over time, has the effect of making life seem colourful and interesting. Maybe that’s why so many people now keep gratitude journals. The colour, the diversity and the reasons for gratitude are all there… we just need to be looking for them and taking notice.

  8. I’m loving your adventure series – reading the quotes is so inspiring – makes you want to get out of the office and see the world….. or work from on the beach for part of each year.

  9. Hi Kathy,

These are really inspiring quotes – I like the one by Wilfred Peterson! I like the idea that an adventure is always around for the making – Just break from your routine from time to time! My desire is to visit a new country every year from now on! I visited England earlier this year!

  10. Indeed, I browse through the web everyday for quotes. Quotes are the gems words of wise people. I learn and inspired by the words, that motivates me to keep moving, keep pursuing my dreams in life.

Quotes are nice, thanks for sharing. 🙂
