What Small Surprises will You Enjoy Today?

I’ve started this surprise week lamenting to my husband that things haven’t felt all that surprising. You see I often get carried away. Close friends will be laughing at this point. I get an idea in my head and I want to take it to the extreme. Surprise week is no different. I wanted to discover and or create something that is/was supremely surprising.

The problem with this approach, as I think most people will see in seconds ( it took me days) is it leaves very little room for little peeks of wonder and surprise to light up one’s day. If I am always on the look out for THE BIG thing, I have no place in my world for the tiny wonders. On Monday I offered this as one of my initiatives for creating and finding more bliss:

  • Look for small surprises. I intend to be delighted by sunsets and sunrises. Find enjoyment from a wild bird who happens to pause on my lawn. Notice when my family tells me that they love me or when Rob’s kisses or hugs linger a bit longer then usual. If you are playing along with me, see what you can allow yourself to be surprised and inspired about!

And then I promptly forgot about it!

Well, today I am going to celebrate all the tiniest sparks of wonder and surprise I can find. I intend on delighting in my daughter’s every game and role play, even if the mommy is dead yet again and we (usually two sisters, I the little one and she the big kid) have to make it on our own. I plan to notice that each plant in our garden has grown overnight and that strawberries have eked ever closer to the perfect shade of red. I will traverse the jungle and be surprised by the fun we (my big sister and I!) have.

(At my girl’s request we are once again constructing a jungle in the living room. Yesterday we did birds, leaves, flowers and vines… today perhaps butterflies and fairies… I’m willing to be surprised!)

I will enjoy the surprise of Fairy Day which my friend Theresa shared with me.

I will be surprised and enjoy my new haircut, relishing the fact that I no longer need to wear a hat EVERY time I leave the house!

I will notice that my sweetie left me coffee on the nightstand, something he does everyday, and today I will allow myself to be surprised by the caring man who remembers the little things.

I will be surprised by all of it. My existence and yours. The sky, the earth, the bees and grass.

The lack of oppressive heat and the feel of cool summer breezes. Lemons freshly squeezed, butter slightly melted… if we pay attention there really is so much to surprise us!

I will delight in clean sheets, warm towels, first sips of coffee and that first morning hug from my girl. I will not be letting today’s small surprises go unnoticed.

How about you? What Small Surprises will You Enjoy Today?

  1. What a fabulous post!!!! I something think big, too, and get disappointed. But there ARE surprising little things to be delighted by. Like Fairy Day (so glad I could surprise YOU!), toadstools taking over our yard, beautiful new birds arriving in our yard, and noticing your Fab new haircut (you look awesome!). 🙂

  2. I love the photos! And such wise messages in here…living with a sense of wonder, being surprised by everything that comes along instead of demanding expectations…such wisdom!! 🙂
