Angels unto each other

We must be angels
unto each other
exchanging times of
weariness, fear and
the least of our selves
for those brilliant
moments when we get
out of the way
and the flow
takes us toward knowing
our own…
each other’s
essence
when I have fallen
my eyes turn to you
in pleading pride
notice…
witness, turn your heart
toward me
us
when you have slipped
extend your need
in all its rawness
humbly
and accept the grace I so
gladly offer
you
in this moment
we actualize
the gift
that always needs
re-opening
love
When Tamara set out to take her photo to represent this week’s habit, she thought of her husband’s Aikido Dojo. I imagine she felt present to the strength and bond the people and that place represent to Cary. What a perfect choice to represent Community.
When she arrived, she had an idea of what kind of photo might symbolize everything that place represented. The unison of motion, the likeness of thought and perhaps purpose. Considering that vision (captured in the photo to the left), I would heartily agree and yet, while she was there, it was something else that caught her eye.
At the end of the Aikido practice, two boys stood arm and arm while some of the older ones continued their workouts. Yes the community of unison, which they had shared minutes earlier was there, however the immediate bond of camaraderie, shared love of the experience, and delight in participation is also in her showcase photo.
January’s poem captures it and Tamara’s great eye led her to it as well. Community is more then the places we visit or the things that we do. Community is about sharing the love. To have community really be alive for us we need to cultivate experiences that enable us to share the love!
Sleep walking through our routines will not give us access to the feeling of community even if we live in the cutest neighborhoods or visit the quaintest coffee shops. Community requires our full participation. We need to know each other, we need to share our mutual love, for coffee or gardening, blogging or reading, traveling or decorating, parenting or caring for parents, exercise or meditation…

January Handl is first and always a mother, has been a preschool teacher and parent educator for 25 years, and currently is an early head start home visitor in her community. She resides with 2 dogs and a cat in Boulder Creek and and simply lives in awe of existence.
