Speaking of Listening – lost listening and how to listen better

Listening 400

Welcome to the Blog Party!  This week we are talking Listening.  This means we are looking for everything and anything on the topic!

LISTENING –to pay attention; to convey a particular impression to the hearer

How to do it better, qualities of good listening, stuff worth listening to… really ANYTHING and EVERYTHING on the topic.

I’m going to start things off by directing you to three posts I think speak beautifully on the topic.

Julian Treasure: 5 ways to listen better – In our louder and louder world, says sound expert Julian Treasure, “We are losing our listening.” In this short, fascinating [TED] talk, Treasure shares five ways to re-tune your ears for conscious listening — to other people and the world around you.

How to Listen When Your Communication Styles Don’t Match by Mark Goulston for Lifehacker – Why do people who consider themselves good communicators often fail to actually hear each other? Often it’s due to a mismatch of styles: To someone who prefers to vent, someone who prefers to explain seems patronizing; explainers experience venters as volatile.

Ten Ways to Improve Your Listening Skills  by Mary Ann Gauthier for Dumb Little Man – It isn’t surprising that we don’t listen effectively. First of all, most of us haven’t been taught how to do so. We learn how to read and write but not how to listen. Secondly, we juggle so many activities on the job and at home that we don’t give much thought to listening. It’s speaking that takes priority. Yet mastering listening skills is critical if we are to become good communicators.

Check them out and add your own finds in a comment or in the linky below. Remember NEW and OLD posts by you and others are welcome.

Here are the ground rules for this party:

  1. Share NEW and OLD posts on the topic. This is your chance to share your favorite posts. If they fit the topic and you think we could benefit it doesn’t matter when you wrote it. Wisdom is timeless!
  2. Share your’s and other’s posts! Ran across a timely tidbit? Let us hear about it too! When sharing someone else’s posts let us know that in a comment.
  3. Leave a comment after posting letting us know why you think the post is worth our time. We are building a knowledge library and your context makes it all the more valuable!
  4. Have Fun! I hope to make this party a fun and valuable addition to your weekend blog hopping.

Note:  If you don’t have a blog to share, photos, ETSY collections and essays are most welcome. Let me know if you need help linking them up!

I look forward to visiting all the treasures YOU add to the collection!
Outrageous Joy,
Kathy

P.S. Next week we will be “Speaking of Nourish” and looking for posts and places that will foster this Bliss Habit!

NOURISH – supply with what is necessary for life, health, and growth

  1. Hi Kathy,
listening can be a gift to others when we really listen.

When I did counselling courses with an amazing tutor I learned more about the depth of listening which then was refreshed a few years ago in a coaching course with Barbara Silva.
Being able to put our own thoughts on hold long enough to really be present and listen ‘between the lines’ takes practice.

Thank you for providing a ‘blog party’ for this important subject.
Here is one of my blog posts: yorindawanner.com/active-listening/
I have not included the full link, so it will end up in your ‘inbox’.
