my favorite snarky things…

Welcome to Tuesdays with Chel.

Each week Chel Micheline of gingerblue dot com offers her perspectives on our Bliss Habits. Please enjoy the wisdom and clarity she offers.

“Snark” is a tricky, tricky thing for me.

I discovered the power of sarcasm and snark when I was about fifteen years old. There was a new girl in my very conservative school and she was outspoken and very, very clever. I found myself gravitating towards her more and more, and I realized it was because she made me laugh, really really hard. I’d never met anyone who made me laugh so hard, in fact.

And a reason for that was because she was very sarcastic. Not caustically so, but she was quick and clever and while she wasn’t unkind, no one was spared. That was really new to me because all my life people had been very *careful* around me because of my health problems. She poked a little fun at me, and I *liked* it. It meant I could poke fun at myself, too.

This was new to me because my parents NEVER allowed me to take myself lightly. My health problems were Serious Business and the idea of poking fun at myself was brand new. But it changed everything for me- I was able to break the ice, not only for other people, but for *myself*.

Anyway, since I learned the Power of Sarcasm from this person, I have spent many years refining my snark. So I have a lot to say about a *lot* of things, but before I launch into any of that, I thought I would just take an opportunity to share some of my favorite snarky stuff with you.

– First, this is “why I can’t make mom friends.”

– Second, there’s some snarky apparel (courtesy of ThinkGeek)

– Third, you should test  your Insult IQ with Lady Snark…

– Fourth, there is ultimate truth, in the form of these ecards

– Finally, some inspiring encouragement for whatever it is you are struggling to get done… (DO NOT let your kids watch or hear this!)

    • Aren’t they funny? Every so often they pop up on Facebook and they are so *true* they just make me laugh. And anything tongue-in-cheek about parenting dings my radar, too. As someone who had an incredibly sheltered childhood with extremely over-protective parents (health problems made them crazy-protective of me!), I’m wary about becoming a hover-mom.

    • One of my friends sent that to me, isn’t it something else? When my husband had a huge deadline at work and at school coincide, he wrote the words to that ditty on post it notes and posted them all over his office. He said it really helped! Whatever it takes, and sometimes what it takes is a catchy tune with bad words about just getting things done 😉

Omg I love that song! And those freaking ecards are so funny, I love so many of them. That new girl at your school sounds like she was a breath of fresh air! That’s what so enamoured me with Joe – his sense of humor. He’s so quick and loves to zing anyone and everyone including himself. I learned how to laugh at life’s aggravating problems rather than just be aggravated. I still am learning, I should say. But he’s helped me gain a lighter view of life, that’s for sure!

    Fun post, Chel! <3
