Life with a Side of Silly

Today we are lucky to have Dani from Life Unconstrained with us! If you have been following Bliss Habits, you probbably remmember her exuberant take  on Joy  a few months back. Dani is full of “big ideas, wicked wisdom, and inspiration” and we are lucky to have her back to talk about whimsy, and silliness. Yes silliness… which probabaly should be it’s own Bliss Habit!

Dani has also been over the top generous with her participation in the Blogversary-apolooza. She has given us multiple copies of the digital self-study retreat Everyday Awareness to share and to one lucky reader, an amazing Magnetizing Session, designed to get you, your life, your projects all on the true north path of your dreams. This coaching session is a $225 value, and you can find the details on how to win at the bottom of this post.

Silliness and whimsy, like joy, are too often relegated to the realms of children. Giggles, make-believe, making faces at the wind, finding shapes and meaning in the clouds, doing things for the sake of doing them…all child’s play.

But embracing silliness as an adult, even in small doses, can open you up to a world beyond your day-to-day, a place of magic and wonder, progress and happiness, Bliss Habits new and old, that exists within the life you already have.

Creativity

Silliness opens the way for creativity, allowing you to see beyond the boxes and rules that exist in your head to a land where anything is possible.

Engage creative silliness by naming clouds, doodling for fun, daydreaming, and letting your mind wander.

Use it to problem-solve, to move beyond your stuck points and creative blocks, to begin new adventures.

Kindness

Have you ever noticed that when you’re happy, you are more kind, more tolerant, and more forgiving than when you’re grumpy or just “blah”? Silliness opens the way for kindness by engaging your “happy place”, putting you in a frame of mind to be kinder, gentler, and more positive.

Engage kind silliness by laughing out loud at silly jokes, dancing in circles until you’re dizzy, hopscotching in the sunshine, or doing whatever it is you do that makes you indescribably happy.

Use it to smile at people you meet, assume the best in yourself and others.

Curiosity and Surprise

When you do things just for fun, just to be silly, just to see what happens, you open the way for curiosity and its partner in crime, surprise.

Engage curious and surprising silliness by doing things just for the pleasure of doing them, asking “what if?” in fun (not self-destructive!) ways, and dipping your toes into new ideas.

Use it to discover new hobbies, find new steps to take, and rock a silly grin on your “oh, s**t!” surprise face.

Hope

Just like a better mood can help you be kind, a world full of silliness and laughter boosts hope.
Silliness is medicine for the soul, and a good laugh can break sunshine through the darkest of clouds.

Engage silliness for hope by having five-second silly breaks when you need them the most; keeping something on your desk on in your purse or wallet that makes you smile, laugh, or giggle.

Use it to bring you up when your outlook is bleak, and to help others through their tough times.

How have silliness and whimsy brightened your world?

  1. Oh my – silliness has saved my behind in more cases than one. My husband and I can be right on the verge of an argument, and one of our children will pop in wearing underwear on their head. How can you stay mad when that is parading around? Intentionally I will do something “silly” – i.e. playful – just to break out of a rut. I’ve stepped out in the rain and dripped it back onto the floor I just cleaned, worn my Vibram toe-shoes out somewhere nicer (just because I can), and painted one of our light cover switches by the back door. Silly? Whimsical? Creative? Who knows…whatever it is, it lifts my spirits. Thank you for the reminder!!!

  2. Silliness is one of the key ways I access my own creativity, as it helps me reconnect to joy at a moment’s notice. I have my Dad to thank for my appreciation of silliness, actually. He taught me the value of having a good sense of humor as well how to use it connect with people. My natural connection to my inner silly is also how I often break the ice, and find it one of the most authentic ways to get people to share a bit of their own inner light. My silly comes out in all I do, because without my silly sass, there is no “me”. And yes, I take the sass as good as I give it.

  3. I love silliness. In fact, i am using silliness as the entire core of my business model. I used to live in America, but then I discoverd that I hated my job. After an abundance of freakouts and a plethora of books I decided I wanted to pursue my childhood dream… To become a ninja.

What does a ninja do? He goes to a far away land and trains in martial arts. So I have recently moved to Japan and am trying to find a martial arts dojo to train at. Unfortunately I was placed in a very small countrside town with no high quality martial arts dojos. I have been forced to laugh at my situation quite often otherwise I would become really frustrated.

Now, I am taking it to another level by documenting what it is like for a soon to be 30 year old to move to Japan and try to become a ninja. I am hoping in time to use this as a platform to turn into a business. Time shall tell. But at the core of it I have had to attain a “silliness” otherwise none of it would work.

  4. I love this post!
How silliness has brightened my life? Simple, We removed the full gloomy feeling of the studio. I painted a chalkboard for us to draw and do silly things (it’s always changing and we will be posting the results on Flickr soon.
But the best part of being silly is that all the jokes and fun we have are making us a lot happier, we enjoy coming to work everyday. We enjoy having fun without worrying and our clients love what we are doing. It’s all about having fun and helping people.
Oh, and don’t forget 2 zombie girls that inspire me to write. 🙂

  5. Terri S Crum says:

I truly believe that if you cannot incorporate silliness into your day somehow, someway…you should just pull the covers over your head & stay in bed!! Sometimes my kids & husband look at me as if to say ‘yeah, you’ve lost it!’….and usually at that very moment they are right!….& thank God I have/did lose it! Cause keeping it all together becomes so very mundane! Silliness should be a commandment!! “#11 Thou shall not finish the day without doing one thing totally silly!!”

  6. Terri S Crum says:

    oops….I left #2 out….

I would love to win this for the ‘bestest’ of all reasons….I love to WIN!!!

    thanks! ;0)

  7. I love how the universe works. Just yesterday, I was saying to my husband that I wanted to bring more silliness into my life. I have definitely taken a more serious approach to my spirituality and often forget about being silly just for the sake of being silly. 🙂 With that in mind, I’m going to break out of my routine today and be silly. I think I’ll put some music on and dance around the house without abandon. Thank you for a great reminder! And thank you for a generous giveaway! 🙂
