The first few days in Mexico were strangely unsettling, yet we couldn’t put our finger on the source.
Toilet paper disposal was eye opening. Bottled water for brushing teeth was expected. Hand sanitizer after handling money made total cents.
We took this all in as part of the adventure, so what was this niggling annoyance?
Light bulb!
Finally.
Nothing looked normal – as in straight, cohesive or uniform as it should be.
Walls leaned, tiles skewed between uneven grout lines, buildings were mishmashed beside each other and even the colour schemes clashed.
Where were the levels, rulers, plumb bobs, squares, spacers and strict architectural guidelines?
Then something magical happened.
Freedom set in.
Released from the multitude of boxes and uncrossed lines long forgotten,
Stopped from the unconscious scanning for the wrong and imperfect,
What was once felt as annoyance became a flow of Life!
Freedom indeed.
Whimsy is the anywhere, anytime quick trip back to Mexico for opening up inner space again.
Pack a few tried-and-trues to have with wherever you go –
Hum a favourite song from an earlier age,
do the happy dance or two,
rock out a tune with air guitar or make paper airplanes
if you can’t find a partner for synchronized ukelele.
Turn left right here.
Stop where you’ve always wanted to.
Make an angel in the sand because there’s no snow.
Reach for a green pen or purple when you think black or blue.
Pick a bouquet of dandelions for a splash of colour.
Laugh for no reason until your belly hurts.
Treat yourself to not a care in the world for five minutes before you go in.
Seize the moment to step out of bounds. Leverage the power of fanciful notions to break through the most habitual ordinary.
Be skeptical if you like, but whimsy will work wonders with even the tiniest slit.
With a wiggle here and a waggle there, whimsy will loosen the tightest of grips for joy and creativity to sneak in behind and throw open wide any portal for light to stream in.
