Gratitudes big enough to pass on…

"Gratitude" by Tamara Magnitsky

I love this picture. You can see it all in their faces. The I made this for you, I really hope you like it. The gratitude and tentative response of I hope I respond the way that will make her know I love it.

Tamara offered me two photos this week but this one really spoke to me. Gratitude is sometimes a tricky path. Teaching our children to be grateful. Showing gratitude for love shown to us. We hope our kids can feel it all yet sometimes, another time, not this one, it doesn’t always go as well. The right response isn’t always measured and true, sometimes we mess up and rather then leaving our children, friends or lovers grateful as we intend, we leave them sad or angry or any number of other things.

January tells it well.

We are limited

          by January Handl

In the world we are limited
We can only channel through a broken vase
The waters of a love
That cannot be contained in such a delicate vessel

Yet in some moments the gates open
And the love is enough
The moment is enough
The vessel fills and spills
Into the smaller vessels
Thirsty to taste the world of
Limits and
Limitlessness

It takes a dedication
It takes a trust and faith
It takes the willingness
To be the instrument of ignition
Of the fires and the flows
That flood uniquely and with purpose
Toward a great unknown unfolding

We don’t get to know the whole
Outcomes, finishes, end results
We get to be this moment
This vessel
This bridge of being here and with
Near and pointing to
But not the final destination

We all came from some
Person or place that was that bridge for us
We all serve hoping to be
What is needed, what can be given
There are no gratitudes big enough
To those who do this work
But I feel it all the same

A sweeping, all encompassing
Amazement at the lives you touch
At the demands you make
At the growth tended by
Your hearts and hands

I am humbled, I am awed
I am grateful

Yes, we are limited. But this doesn’t keep us from marching bravely on toward a great unknown unfolding.

Being grateful. Sharing gratitude. Teaching gratitude.  How will you pass it on?

  1. This was truly uplifting reading and gave me much food for thought! I have a daily gratitude practice which means a lot to me. I feel that dwelling in gratitude automatically makes it very easy for me to share what I am grateful and thankful for. I’m all for sharing. ;o)
