A Touch of Whimsy

Garden Craft from Recycled Materials

Welcome to Whimsy Week Bliss Enthusiasts!

This week couldn’t have come at better time! I was getting all serious in my exploration and consideration of Passion, so much so I have been considering changing that Bliss Habit to Play yet here on the heals of all that comes marvelous whimsy. What is more playful then whimsy? I dare say nothing! Except possibly my 4 year old who embodies both things marvelously well. Anyway I digress! Let’s begin by taking a look at my definition of whimsy:

WHIMSY – extravagant, fanciful, or excessively playful expression; an odd or fanciful notion

“Extravagant”  how marvelous! When was the last time you did something that could be considered extravagant? This does not have to mean expensive by the way! Often that word conjures up spending heaps of money but that isn’t what it has to mean. Being extravagant can mean wearing party shoes already in your closet for everyday or opening that prize jar of jam for today’s toast or using the fine china for that breakfast. Whimsy often means the tiniest of touches that while not necessary add immensely to the mood and experience.

“Fanciful”  as in led by fancy rather then reason! I LOVE that. Reason, of course has it’s place but as I mentioned above I can get terribly serious about things, even the pursuit of bliss, and being fanciful can help to lighten things up.

“Excessively playful!” My daughter is going to love this! She often tells me that I don’t play with her enough. Her definitions of “play with” are very specific (must be at home, and I must perform my assigned role play to the letter for it to count LOL) which likely comes from her mother’s earnest approach to do things “right.” We both would benefit from loosening up.

Thank goodness Whimsy Week is upon us to change all this!

How about you? Where in your life would you benefit from a whimsy injection? What special touch could you add to your routine? What added delight could you offer your co-workers or customers? What magical moment could you create with those you love?

This week, let’s take time to add a touch of  WHIMSY!

  • Getting in the mood for Whimsy – Each day I will be doing a little “flash inspiration”. I am going to type the word Whimsical (fill in blank) into Google and see what shows up. I just did it  with Whimsical Ducks, Whimsical Food, and Whimsical Backyards. Try it and see what you find — share it here in the comments for others to enjoy. Whimsy is definitely best when shared!
  • Field work – Based on your own “flash inspiration” for the day plan to execute something whimsical. Do something unexpected for your family, friends.or co-workers.
  • Whimsy Craft –  It is time to get out the glue gun! I’m going to do several whimsical crafts with Sweets this week.  Even if you aren’t a crafty sort of person you might want to consider trying something you have never done before. Peruse We Bloom Here  for tons of inspiration if you don’t know where to start!

  • Have some fun – I think this makes a huge difference in the experience of actual bliss . Previously I got so serious about my “proper consideration” of the virtues I forgot what the experiment is all about — more bliss! This week let’s see if we can get the bliss flowing everyday!

Where will you be adding Whimsy?
