Whimsical Garden Dreams…

My Sweetie and I are in the middle of our backyard renovation. Friends will laugh because “middle of” is being used VERY loosely. We have removed a few bushes and we’ve looked at some stone but this has been the state for several months. We’ve watched dozens upon dozens of HGTV shows devoted to patio or yard updates and we’ve oohed and awed over all the choices in garden catalogs and on gardening web sites. We have some vague notion of an outdoor living room with eclectic and whimsical touches. I see myself walking barefoot across the inviting stone work to settle under a wysteria dripping pergola as I sip my morning coffee. I imagine dinner parties stretching late into the evening under delicate strings of fairy lights.

I imagine, if only for a moment, that these magical places are a part of what I see:

From Flavorwire’s 10 most Surreal and Spectacular Botanical Spaces

“Landscape designer Evangelisto Blanco built these strange arches out of conifer cypress trees in the 1960′s. They lead the way into a garden filled with more of his work with the conifer cypress — a surreal topiary garden filled with creatures and abstractions, including a bullfight scene and a monkey on a motorcycle.”

Whew! After that magical tour I’m tired! Perhaps a little nap…

What are YOUR whimsical garden dreams?

  1. My garden dreams? To buy the house next door (it’s a rental- it’s no one’s beloved home) and knock it down and use the entire property (1/4th an acre- not terribly big) to build a bigger garden for me and little park for my daughter.

I would love to have a succulent garden, a strolling garden, a pond, benches all over, a few trees that sort of brush the ground and make shady spaces and could hold a swing, plus a little wandering path through all of it where Gracie could ride her bike and Tom and I could just sort of meander around. Just a serene and peaceful place, all ours, safe from the speeding cars on the street but close to our home.

  2. Gardens are indeed most magical and whimsical places! Especially “wild” gardens. I must thank you again for sharing some of my photos here! What a lovely surprise (are you sure this isn’t surprise week, Kathy?). I hope they brought a smile to people’s faces!!!!

A whimsy nature tip…always be mindful of faerie homes. You’ll often find faerie doors in trees. Be respectful and knock before entering. Maybe leave a little treat or two…the faeries will love them!
