In Service Soul To Soul

Living Bliss - Head In The Clouds

I suppose there’s not much of a stretch to think of our cats when reflecting on Service.

Without a doubt we are servants-in-training forever.

All kidding aside, the undertaking of responsibility to ensure their care and thrivival for a lifetime brings out a deeper meaning of Service.

In Service Soul To SoulService is more than helping, and not at all about doing something to make ourselves feel good or expecting something in return.

Being in Service is allowing who we really are to come forward and connect soul to soul.

We are present with another being, if even for a moment, in a way to clearly say “I see you, and I’m here for you.”

In this busy time of year the mulling wheels began turning. What seemingly little things could we do to make a difference in someone’s day, while not piling more on our own plates.

Here’s the beginnings of a list:

1) Walk Mindfully: Whether a street, mall or hallway, be where you are instead of thinking of the thousand things left to do. See those around you. Greet others with a kind look when you make eye contact.

2) Smile: Given their contagious nature, a genuine smile is so easy to give and hard not to return. They have the power to shift even the funkiest of moods.

3) Be a Angel: In colder climates a Snow Angel clears the snow off sidewalks and driveways for someone who is less able, doesn’t have the time or just because. Look around and see the many things you could do … shovel snow, put garbage cans back, sweep a sidewalk, carry in groceries, pull weeds in a forgotten patch to name a few possibilities.

4) Give a compliment: Nothing lifts spirits like a genuine compliment, especially when unsolicited from a stranger.

5) Hand write a note or letter: In the age of texts, chats and emails, a handwritten note to express your appreciation for something they did or what they mean to you becomes a treasure often returned to.

6) Lend a helping hand: Little gestures make huge differences. Opportunities are always presenting themselves for simple things like helping someone out of a store, holding open a door, giving up your seat on a bus, letting someone go ahead at the check out counter or taking books back the library for starters

7) Have patience:  As stress rises, patience grows short. Remembering to step back, breathe and bring patience to the situation shifts the space for everyone around. You’re better able to see what is needed instead of continuing what’s happening.

8) Pick up an chore or errand: With a gazillion things always to be done, handling a chore takes the weight of responsibility off their shoulders for a few minutes. Not having to make the coffee, feed the cats, wash dishes means you recognize what they do.

9) Unschedule: Taking even one thing off your schedule to spend time doing nothing means you free up time to just be with one another.

10) Give A Hug: When you feel yourself holding back a hug, give one. The connection has already been made. Asking permission can act as a segue. Be forewarned though, hugs change relationships because of the ties they create.

11) Receive unconditionally: A gift given unconditionally with joy is diminished by bringing reciprocity into the picture.  Simply receiving with gratitude acknowledges the connection of you seeing them for seeing you.

Captured here already or not, what simple acts would you consider say “I see you”?

  1. Thankyou Lorraine! I am amazed, though I shouldn’t be by the common threads that are woven through the posts in Bliss Habits, especially given that Nelson Mandela transitioned yesterday. It seems at some level we all knew that, including Kathy whose theme this week was service. I love your take on it!

    • Linda, I too oscillate between amazed and ‘well, of course’ with how everything fits together so perfectly and allows us to reflect more deeply off of each other and events such as Mandela’s transition. The world we know is possible truly is, and we are woven tightly into its fabric. Many thanks!
