Choose for yourself, what works in the moment?

Linda Adsetts and The Group are here with their weekly Go for the Joy message. Enjoy!

“Present moment, Wonderful moment” by Olga Bernfeld

As I read the contributions from other Bliss Habits writers, I am very aware that my life is currently much simpler without children. Children add a dimension of chaos to their families that can be delightful and confounding all in the same instance. They want what they want and when they want it Mom or Dad has to deal with it then and there. They are not easily put off!

When my son Alexander was child, he is now a young man, he knew what he wanted, in that moment. Sometimes those moment would extend into hours, as he immersed himself in a subject, week after week until he grew tired of it. He would need to have a particular book or crayons or magazine or a ride to a lesson, depending on what particular delight caught his attention.

We spent a lot of time in the car some weeks, driving him to boxing, snowboarding, piano and hiking trails. Each one of those, except for the hiking,  dropped away over the years as he discovered who he was and what lit him up, from the inside out.

Simple is not always easy. Simple requires a letting go of judgment and conclusions and allowing for the future to unfold. Simple can be difficult! But and here is the big but, it is a state of mind. If I had given myself the gift of being more allowing when he was a child, I would have found the journey more delightful.

What if simplicity was not about giving up stuff, though it might be, but about giving up our preconceived ideas about what is simple. Could it be the lack of allowing that caused the chaos? What if I could have allowed myself to be in the flow all of the time? On reflection I did it some of the time. It made life easier.

I am not talking about giving in but about being at peace with what is. As human being we tend to look back at our life and think thoughts that are clouded with time. I have heard cries of “it was so much simpler back then!”. If simple is what we wanted in this lifetime we wouldn’t have had the desire for more.

Our parents wanted us to have a better life and we want the same thing for our children. Simple, not always, because we, individually are deciding what is simple and what isn’t. It is all perspective! Go figure!

My simple will be different than yours. Isn’t that a good thing? No one likes to be told what to do, including our precious children. They want to figure it out for themselves. My son’s life would be viewed as being simple by many people. He is an avid outdoors man. He loves to climb rocks and hike mountains. His work is his passion. He teaches others. It doesn’t pay particularly well and as a consequence his life is void of the stuff that others might consider important.

So simple is a state of mind, don’t you think? It is whatever brings us peace in the moment. It is whatever brings us joy in the moment and I guess that is The Group’s cue. (smile)

Believe in yourselves and do not allow other’s judgments to dictate what is right for you. You are your own best expert dear ones. You get to decide what is simple and what isn’t. Such a complicated word that doesn’t reflect anything but a simple desire to be in joy. How you get there is your journey. It will change over time as your lives change.

You would not want it to be any different. You chose planet earth as your playground for all of it’s possibilities. You wanted in on the fun. We observe that the only time you want to go back to simpler times is when you are in overwhelm with your current place.

What if you could find a way to be in the moment? What if you could allow yourselves to out of judgement and choose for yourself, what works in the moment?

Sometimes it is the simple things, breathing to remind yourself you are alive. Hugging someone to remember that you are love. A walk in the woods to ground you into the moment. Anything that will allow you and give you the space to come back to you….

Magnificent beings of light and love-really!

You all are!

  1. You leave such warm, positive messages with gentle encouragement, Linda! This summer I find myself in simplify mode–reducing online time, reducing possession, etc. to create more space for my heart, mind and body to grow in. :o)
